Greymouth: The Beautiful City with a Rich Past

The town of Greymouth, nestled at the foot of the Southern Alps has a rich history, ranging from the times the Maoris made their establishments at this place. Thomas Brunner entered the then Greymouth in 1864, and saw the potential of coal mining in the Grey Valley. In the present days, forestry has taken over as the principal occupation, but gold and coal mining used to be the staple occupation. The gold mining history of the town is still preserved in the nearby museums and Shantytown. The town is divided into three areas as divided by the mouth of the River Grey, namely Blaketown, Karoro and Cobden.

Shangtytown is one living example of the bygone prosperous era of gold mining.

One of the most popular attractions of Greymouth is the beautiful Elizabeth walkway. A 3 hour walk in entirety, the Point Elizabeth Walkway is famous with locals and tourist alike. Picturesque coastal views and an old water race preserve the memories of the 19th century gold miners. Various old gold mining sites can be visited while on the walk, along with a quayside walk at the track.
