A Mesmerising Insight of the City of Taupo

City of Taupo and Lake Taupo rank amongst the most beautiful landscapes of New Zealand and provide tourists with the much loved ‘picture postcard’ views. Located at about 45 minutes of driving distance from Rotorua and 3 hours away from Auckland, the city of Taupo is noted for its serene environs, slow pace of life and the admirable natural features of its Lake. The lake fringes the quaint town of Turangi on the other side and serves as the base camp for adventure lovers-- desirous of snow skiing at Tongariro National Park or trekking on the natural trails beyond.

Just like Rotorua, Taupo also has many volcanic activities and formations in its vicinity. While the Wairakei Reserve and Orakei Korako are known for their thermal activity, other areas in the vicinity are known for their silica terraces and unique geographical features. One of the most interesting highlights of Taupo is that the origin of the entire region on North Island is attributed to its giant volcanic eruption that led to the formation of the Lake Taupo, the biggest volcanic ‘caldera’ of NZ. The serene waters of Lake Taupo hide the thermal manifestations (fumaroles or cracks) at the bottom and lure tourists with their beauty and aquatic activities alike.

There are a host of activities on the cards of vacationers in Taupo, both at its lake and within the city. If you are fond of savouring delicious trout dishes, then head towards the restaurants and local eateries of Toupo after visiting its hot water spas, Maori artefacts and scores of curio shops. Taupo also boasts of a throbbing nightlife, with pubs, nightclubs and dance floors beckoning the young and old alike. The other attractions of the region include the glistening waters of the Huka Falls, (just 10 km away and easy accessible by rented cars in Taupo), well manicured greens of its golf course and spectacular trekking routes that take nature lovers into the lap of lush green environs in the vicinity.

Lake Taupo is another interesting spot where you can indulge in hours of trout fishing, take a relaxing cruise around the lake or savour the tastes of local cuisines in one of the fine dining restaurants nearby. Kayaking and boat tours to a Maori place of worship are other activities on the cards of locals and tourists alike. An aerial view of the lake is also possible—if you choose to paraglide over the cold waters of the lake. Last but not the least, holidaymakers love to take a rejuvenating drive around the fringes of the lake and click beautiful pictures from diverse angles.
